World: World barley trade forecast increased in USDA’s January report

World barley trade 2017/18 is forecast at 26.24 mln tonnes in USDA’s January report as compared to 25.84 mln forecast last month.

Barley export forecasts are up for Ukraine (+200 thousand tonnes to 4.9 mln tonnes), Argentina (+100 thousand tonnes to 1.8 mln), and Kazakhstan (+100 thousand tonnes to 700 thousand). Import forecasts are up for Iran (+100 thousand tonnes to 1.4 mln), Turkey (+200 thousand tonnes to 250 thousand), and India (+100 thousand tonnes to 400 thousand).

Global barley trade in 2016/17 is estimated at 29.579 mln tonnes.

World barley production is seen lower this month, at 141.663 mln tonnes vs. 141.863 mln in the December report (146.225 mln in 2016/17). Forecast is up for Argentina (+100 thousand tonnes to 2.85 mln tonnes) and down for Russia (minus 300 thousand tonnes to 20.2 mln).

Total barley consumption is forecast at 146.114 mln tonnes this month (147.414 mln in the December report, 150.275 mln in 2016/17), whereas ending stocks are seen at 17.944 mln tonnes (18.834 and 22.395 mln tonnes, respectively).
